HDPE: An Overview

HDPE was first discovered in 1954 by researchers J. Paul Hogan and Robert L. Banks at the Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. This incredible product is now known as HDPE but was originally called Marlex ® polyethylene. The combination of ethylene and propylene resulted in crystalline polypropylene and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) which is now at the heart of a multi-million-dollar industry.

High-density polyethylene, often referred to as HDPE, is the number one product on the market for high-quality plastic for everything from construction applications to food storage and is recognized throughout many industries as well as found in customers' homes.

HDPE resin applications will guarantee a stronger more resilient product that's resistant to chemicals and abrasions for stronger, more flexible results you might be looking for. Unfortunately, many people are not aware of what HDPE can offer for the best solution by using this product for incredible success. We are going to offer some everyday uses for HDPE plastics that will give you a whole new perspective that will turn your head around.

Where you can Find HDPE Products in your Home

Bathroom and Counters: Your beauty and cosmetic products are possibly kept in HDPE plastic containers. While the contents are more important to most people than the packaging, HDPE plastic plays an important role in the safety and long-lasting qualities you expect.

Research has shown that at least 17% of consumers rarely check the expiration dates listed on their products. If your items are packaged in HDPE, they will be protected from many common issues such as corrosion or leaking. HDPE, unlike glass, will last a much longer period of time and will be resistant to chemicals. As this plastic is opaque, your contents will be safe from UV rays that can degrade the product. HDPE also resists chemicals and corrosion for greater peace of mind. HDPE plastic is the chosen material for personal care products due to its uncompromising strength, long shelf life, and protective barriers. This plastic is also used to make toothpaste tubes and Colgate plans on recycling these tubes by 2025. Toothpaste tubes are now using different grades of HDPE. They are available in rigid or flexible designs and will protect many products such as face wash, shampoo, conditioners, and lotions from contamination. The products contained in HDPE packaging will last a longer period of time than with other plastics.

Medicine containers for over-the-counter purchases are now using HDPE plastic for the same reasons including no contamination. This plastic is perfect for many household cleaning products including laundry detergent, bleach, and fabric softeners. Because HDPE is resistant to chemicals, it's the best choice for many household cleaning products in comparison to other materials that can be harmed by chemicals.

About Items Stored In Your Garage

There are items in your garage that should have HDPE protection to withstand exposure to chemicals without corroding. It only makes common sense that applications requiring chemicals use HDPE for automotive maintenance including antifreeze, gasoline, and coolants.

HDPE bottles offer safety by preventing leaks and will stand up to temperatures up to 248°F for a short time and 230°F for a longer period of time. The materials you keep in your garage that have constant temperature changes will be safer in HDPE containers.

If you or someone in your household is an athlete, HDPE offers protection for sports equipment such as shoulder pads made from soft polyethylene foam and a hard polyethylene shell. In most cases, the shell is made of HDPE because it will not branch so it is stronger and more dense to absorb impact. Some water sports equipment offers small levels of HDPE.

Outside Furniture & Decor

Because HDPE plastic is moisture-resistant, it can stand up to a large range of temperatures and offers higher tensile strength. Outdoor furniture for patios, yards, or on the side of a structure will be protected by HDPE.

Polyethylene is chemical-resistant making many items easy to clean with a standard cleaning chemical that is also found in HDPE and will not corrode delicate features. Manufacturers can recycle HDPE from jugs or various bottles to create HDPE outdoor furniture or other outdoor items. Outdoor furniture is durable and maintenance-free even though they are left outside in all kinds of weather.

HDPE plastic is used for many purposes such as food containers, milk jugs, or bottles. HDPE will last for many years due to its incredible properties. Whether you want a trash bin that will bounce back from an impact from a vehicle or you are tired of garbage bags that rip and tear when all you want are bags that will last even under the weight. HDPE is the plastic you are looking for.

Manufacturers creating outdoor furniture, food delivery services providing customers with great food or hardy playground equipment standing up to constant abuse from children, HDPE plastic will meet your requirements.
