Gravel Driveway Tips

Many homeowners think creating a driveway is an easy task Just flatten the surface, lay down some gravel, and you are set to go! Wrong! There are preparations, measurements, and choosing the right gravel, and there are many other factors involved if you want a good, long-lasting driveway that will last for many years. Many landscape experts know it takes work, time, and patience if you want to do it the right way.

Experts have shared their tips for designing, installing, and maintaining an inexpensive driveway that should serve you well.

Finished Gravel Driveway

# 1 -Spend Money For Expert Installation

Many homeowners think gravel is inexpensive and not a problem. What most people do not realize, if you don't know how to properly install gravel, you won't get the results you are hoping for.

If you overlook a compacted base or choose cheap materials for your edging, sooner or later you will have many maintenance issues which will require frequent attention. Proper installations requires the following:

• Excavate down to 12 inches
• You must compact the subgrade
• You must cover the bottom and sides of the excavated areas with geotextile fabric
• Add 8 inches of base material compacting at 3-inch lifts (well-graded crusher run).
• Install an edging of steel or anodized aluminum.
• lay down a 3-inch layer of pea gravel.

When following the installation steps, you can expect to pay $15 to $35 per square foot. Keep in mind, a good quality pea gravel driveway will cost less than pavers but more than asphalt or concrete. Poorly installed gravel will lead to drainage issues, and the gravel will easily move out of the boundaries. It's suggested using exposed aggregate concrete to cut down on the cost rather than trying to save on installation.

#2 – Use Belgian block edging to improve the appearance of your driveway

Some thought must go into the edging material for your driveway. Edging material also contains gravel while still providing a great look for the border. Belgian blocks are large blocks that measure approximately 11” x 8” x 4” and that's because the blocks can be placed lengthwise on top of the compacted base and the 3-inches of pea gravel will leave one inch of the blocks rising above the surface of the completed driveway. If you want to go the extra mile, lay the blocks on their faces in a running bond or an offset design running bond to create an attractive apron.

#3 – Perform regular maintenance

No driveway is free of maintenance. Concrete must be cleaned and resealed. Pavers need to be weeded and joint filling and sometimes tar must be reapplied. The gravel driveway has its own maintenance needs as well. Maintenance can be kept at a minimum with good installation techniques It's believed that yearly re-grading will help keep the driveway looking its very best. For driveways that are installed without woven geotextile fabric or 8 inches of compacted base material, the need for maintenance will increase. Without proper steps, your driveway gravel will sink into the ground and more than likely wash out of place caused by rainwater or runoff irrigation.

#4 – Your Driveway Can Collect Water

You can actually design your driveway to collect water. As your driveway is probably the largest paved area on your property, gravel is an incredible material that will pass water through it to an underground reservoir. You have a level for gravel, followed by a setting bed, then another layer of pea gravel. Depending on what you will collect water for can dictate the depth of each layer.

#5 – Make the layer of pea gravel shallow to prevent ruts

Many people stay away from gravel driveways because the ruts are formed by tires, making the surface unattractive. Never spread the pea gravel too deep, it should not exceed 3 inches. Keeping the gravel relatively shallow will prevent shifting and will require less upgrading.

#6 – Use a local stone for your gravel color & natural look

Most areas have their own colors of gravel such as a beige to a darker brown, while other colors might be lighter. You might want to consider selecting a color that is natural to your area but if you already know what color you want to use, you can get what you want at an added cost.

#7 – Ask yourself how the color will work with your home

When choosing a color for your driveway, it's important to weigh how it works with your home. Some colors are excellent for Colonial-style homes but will look out of place with a modern-style home. On the other hand, if you want a clean, crisp look with a modern landscape, compare colors first. If you want to highlight your home's historical roots, gravel is the best choice.

#8 – Your climate could decide if you use gravel or not

If you are planning on changing your landscaping or installing a gravel driveway, you should take your climate into consideration. If your region suffers from intensive heat, heavy rain or snow, or you experience heavy winds, a gravel driveway might not be your best choice. Plowing could be difficult and will probably have to be handled by an expert. If you have a gravel driveway and live in a climate with constant snowfall, allow the first snowfall to pack down and form a protective barrier to prevent the gravel from moving. That said, as long as your gravel driveway has been installed properly, rain, snow, high winds, or other weather conditions should not affect the surface.
