Our Green roof edging is a lightweight, flexible restraint that provides a finished look and assures an easy installation. Engineered for use in green roof applications, they can be used to retain green roof planting material, as well as stones, pavers, and tiles for rooftop walkways. They are made from recycled aluminum material, is 100% recyclable, and qualifies for LEED points. They will not fade from the sun as aluminum reflects ultraviolet radiation and is not damaged by it.

Installation is just sliding the two edge connectors into each other, or using our optional crimping tool. we also have drain boxes, with optional lids.

With wall heights from 3” to 8.5”, our edging has proven successful for use with both intensive and extensive green roofs.

In recent years, more homeowners have been thinking about adding a green roof to their homes. In reality, this is not a new idea, it goes as far back as the 1940s in Germany. With the rise of environmental concerns and moving back to nature, more homeowners are jumping on board.

What Green Roof Is Right For You?

Before running out and buying whatever you need to create a green roof, there are some things you need to know. Green roofs come in several layers including a growing medium allowing plants to grow on your roof. First and foremost, will you be able to maintain a green roof on a regular basis or will you leave it to nature to do it for you? Also, some roofs are easier to access than others.

Let's start by taking a look at different green roof systems and which one will work for you.

The Three Green Roof Designs

Intensive Green Roof: If you have large plants and are looking forward to a green roof that is like a real garden and comes with watering facilities, this roof is probably the perfect match for you. The intensive green roof has deeper mediums than the other designs. They can be 7 to 24 inches and might have lawns, shrubs, trees, and perennials.

Make sure you have easy access to the roof for frequent maintenance and easy care. You might want to add a walkway making your trips for maintenance easier.

Extensive Green Roof: If you are into vegetation, this might be a good choice. Vegetation will be thinner around 1.6 to 5 inches in thickness and will be lighter with suitable plants that are low maintenance and self-sustaining. With a large slope or flat roof, it can be harder to reach plants making it a good area for maintaining certain kinds of vegetation. Most plants for this system include succulents, grasses, mosses, and sedums.

Hybrid Or Semi-Intensive Green Roof: With this system, you have a larger selection of plants to choose from. Also, there is very little maintenance involved. This roof is referred to as a hybrid which is a blend of an extensive and intensive roof. A number of plants that grow in a depth of 5 to 7 inches will work well with this system. Some plants include herbs, ornamental grass, perennials, sedums, and shrubs. Irrigation is rarely needed and requires only an average level of maintenance. Because sedums come in a range of colors and sizes, these plants can be a great touch to a semi-intensive rooftop.

Steps For Creating Your Green Roof

You should consult a professional to analyze your roof to make sure it is strong enough to handle a green roof. Whether you are planning on an extensive or intensive green roof, the basic layer of the green roof will always be the same.

Getting Started

Step One: The first layer should have a water and roof-proof membrane. One sheet can be used to cover the entire area to keep water and roots from reaching the roof. A heavy-duty pond liner from your local garden center can be used with an adhesive. Make sure to mark all the outlets to guarantee you have suitable drainage.

Step Two: You have to cut into the containment frame in order to allow water to run into the gutter. You need to use pebbles and a layer of stones or rocks to keep the outlets clear. This will help maintain there are no blockages or unwanted vegetation forming around the edges of the roof.

Step Three: It's time to add a substrate layer which is normally 2.75 to 7.87 inches thick but can vary depending on the kind of vegetation. Using a substrate mixture of 70% inorganic material and 30% organic material, it will be light enough so you can prevent unwanted growth of vegetation.
