Why Use Driveway Edging?

Although driveway edging has a nice curb appeal, it will stop rain from washing away your yard or prevent cars from leaving ruts behind. If you have an asphalt driveway, you know it's soft and cannot withstand harsh elements. Over time, the edges of your driveway will start to deteriorate but using driveway edging will help keep it in place and prevent cracking that will lead to further damage. Here are some great ideas you can do yourself to boost your home's appeal and prevent unneeded costs for repairs.

Concrete Pavers
This edging is used to create a sturdy, slip-resistance, and is relatively easy to install. As they come in a variety of designs and textures, you can customize them to match your home. If you want a practical solution, concrete pavers are an excellent choice and will complement asphalt.

Driveway Edging Stones
Belgian blocks and cobblestones are very popular choices due to their durability. Also, if you live in a climate that ushers in harsh winters, this is probably your best choice. They come in an array of sizes and colors to find the perfect match to contrast your driveway. Unlike some other materials, edging stones are more expensive and require extra preparation to install. The upside, there will be no maintenance needed once the stones are set in the ground.

The Difficulty Level Of Installation Is Moderate

Border Landscaping
If you have some gardening experience, placing plants or flowers along the side as the edging will offer a natural look to your lawn. It's also a popular choice for creating curb appeal. That said, garden edging will need upkeep but will be a great option if you live in a moderate climate where plants can bloom all year round. There are many great border plants to choose from including ferns, hosta, and monkey grass. Other choices could include spurge plants and barberry shrubs that are not expensive at all. Just make sure the plants you choose will work with your landscaping and are tolerant to pests, drought, or diseases.

Gravel

If you live in a rainy climate, gravel is a great choice to keep rainwater from washing out your lawn. It's also one of the least expensive options and comes in a variety of custom shapes and colors to match your home. Crushed concrete, pea gravel, and crushed shells are considered the most affordable. It's very easy to install, simply dig a shallow trench and fill it with your stones just make sure you refresh the gravel every few years.

Even though bricks are limited in colors from brown to red. Clay brick is an attractive choice to install on your property. Its classic looks will cost a little more but its durability is worth it.

Edging Your Driveway

Each type of driveway border is different and requires different installation requirements. There are general guidelines you should follow if you are using pavers, Belgian blocks, cobblestones, or brick.

First off, inspect the driveway edges to ensure they are straight and level. If you have an asphalt driveway, you must cut the edges with a saw. Draw a chalk line before cutting to ensure it has a straight edge.

Dig trenches along the sides of the driveway. It will hold the border in place and create a foundation for good drainage. The height and width of the trenches will depend on how many blocks you plan to use. In general, check that the trenches are level.

Add a one-inch layer of concrete to the trench after mixing it to a stiff consistency. Start by only filling the trench with enough concrete to prepare for a 5-block section of the edging material.

While the concrete is still wet, be sure to place the blocks against the driveway. Make sure they are level and sitting against the edge. To make sure the blocks stay in place, use a mallet to tap them down until they are secured in the trench.

Fill in the extra space in the trench with concrete until it's level with the driveway's surface. It should be two inches lower than the top of the blocks.

Gradually fill the trench by pouring a section of concrete and laying the blocks in 5-piece increments. Repeat this process until the driveway is totally encompassed by the border.
