Our Flexible Black Plastic Sheet is a HDPE (high-density polyethylene) long roll that is used in a variety of applications. These rolls have a built in UV inhibitor that helps to resist the breakdown of the plastic when exposured to ultraviolet light. Therefore, this product can be installed above or below ground.

This commercial grade plastic sheet is waterproof, has a 100 year estimated lifespan (when not in direct sunlight), and is rodent and insect damage resistant. This sheet is non-biodegradable and will not rot or mildew.

The Flexible Black Plastic Sheet is made in the USA and is able to withstand both hot and cold temperatures. It is available in a range of thicknesses and widths.

*The widest HDPE roll that we offer is currently 5’ (60 inches).

Please note that we are unable to provide custom roll lengths.

About HDPE Or High Density Polyethylene Plastic

HDPE or High density Polyethylene is a plastic created from crude oil. It is one of the most adaptable materials anywhere. This is a grade material commonly used in manufacturing for milk jugs, shampoo bottles, and plastic chemical containers. Due to its low-cost and long-lasting properties, it's used in several consumer goods. HDPE's characteristics allows it to withstand extreme temperatures and pressure. High density polyethylene is also resistant to UV and chemicals.

HDPE is used for medical devices, in construction materials, and many other industries. It's so flexible that it's often used for automotive parts, toys, and some clothing.

How HDPE Is Made

Its produced by mixing 2 chemicals together. One is a long-chain polymer known as polyethylene (PE) which comes from crude oil and the other is a short chain polymer known as ethylene glycol (EG). The molecules bond together to form a new molecule called HDPE (high density polyethylene). This new molecule has similar properties found in polyethylene or PE but is much stronger. This is why it's so popular for making things like plastic bags, pipes, and bottles and\\long with other products that can hold heavier items.

The Benefits Of HDPE

Resistant To Heat
One important aspect of HDPE is its ability to withstand enormous temperatures. HDPE is non-toxic because it does not contain any harmful materials. It can be used for certain medical devices, and other products where safety is critical.

It's Super Strong
HDPE has a tensile strength of 23.0 to 29.5 MPa (Megapascal Pressure Unit) which is 1.5 to 2.1 times stronger than polyethylene. It can withstand heavier loads without cracking or breaking. Its unique properties come from its molecular structure. It has a low degree of branching which means it can withstand heavy loads. Also, it's harder than most plastics and therefore can resist higher pressure. This is one reason why its used for piping and other outdoor uses.

HDPE Is Recyclable

When HDPE reaches the end of its lifecycle, it can be melted down and used again. It involves heating the material until it turns into liquid again. Once turned back into liquid, resin is produced that can be molded into new products.

Recycled HDPE is used to make new HDPE products because it creates lower energy and less greenhouse gases. Also, recycling creates value from waste which will help to improve the environment.

Superior Resistance To Chemicals

HDPE is resistant to chemicals which makes it perfect when high chemical resistance is needed. It resists many chemicals such as grease, acid, detergents, alkalis, oil, and solvents. It's used in packaging, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, adhesives, paints, and the list goes on.

Impact Resistant

HDPe can withstand impacts with a force of 50 kN or 10 tons. PET can only withstand impacts up to 20 kN or 4 tons of impact.

The difference between PET and HDPE, PET is not as thick as HDPE and therefore does not handle impact as well. Due to its density, HDPE withstands pressure better than other plastics. That said, PET is polyethylene terephthalate that is clear, strong, and lightweight, and recyclable.

Popular Items Made From HDPE

Milk jugs and shampoo containers are often made from HDPE materials. HDPE is strong because milk and other thick liquids like shampoo are heavier and need added support. HDPE containers are lightweight and will not add to the total weight of the product. HDPE is easily recyclable and can be renewed into other products. In turn, this will greatly cut back on single use bottles and other plastics ending up in landfills.

For Pipes Underground

There are many applications using HDPE including fire ring mains, sewer mains, trenching of water mains, gas pipelines, and horizontal drilling for electrical and telecommunication channels. According to many companies, HDPE systems are not as expensive as other systems and will save you money on maintenance over time.

Accessories On Playgrounds

Many children's accessories on playgrounds are made of HDPE plastic. This equipment is lightweight and lasts for a long time without breaking down. The equipment is very easy to clean and maintenance is minimal. As these accessories are BPS free, chemicals will not leak putting kids and pets in harm's way.

Toys Made Of HDPE

Because HDPE is so long-lasting and free of toxins, it's safe for children and their pets. Many toys are made from HDPE and can withstand the impact from heavy abuse caused by children and pets on a daily basis.

Recycled HDPE

Recycled HDPE materials are used for many outdoor products such as bike racks, fences, furniture, decking, garbage bins, chairs, benches, and tables.

On top of that, HDPE is one of the best environmentally friendly materials due to its low maintenance requirements, it's long lasting, nontoxic, and can be recycled many times over.

Conclusion

HDPE or High Density Polyethylene is extremely versatile and used for many purposes. It's lightweight, flexible, strong, and will be around for a long time. It will not easily bend, stretch, or become out of shape. It can resist heat and chemicals and is easy to cut and shape. This is why it's a chosen product for so many applications. HDPE is recyclable meaning there will be less impact on the environment.
