There are several ups and downs when deciding on an asphalt or concrete driveway. One downside is the cost, you will have to bring in a professional installer to lay down the asphalt or concrete which can cost several thousands of dollars and it doesn't stop there.

Both asphalt and concrete need continual maintenance after construction which will cost even more money. On top of that, the installer has to reseal the driveway every few years creating another added cost.

Think Gravel

If you decide to have a gravel driveway, there are several good benefits. You do not have to hire a professional installer, and the materials for a gravel driveway are a great deal less expensive. Also, you can do it yourself which will save you a lot of money.

Longevity

Gravel driveways require low maintenance and will last a very long time. Gravel driveways do not degrade over time which will save on repairing surface cracking that is commonplace with paved surfaces like asphalt and concrete.

Gravel Is Environmentally Friendly

Gravel driveways will prevent runoff water from forming streams of debris that will run into the street. Because gravel is porous, it will (generally) prevent standing water from collecting into puddles or ponds on the surface of the driveway. When water accumulates on a paved driveway, it will cause water to move to another nearby area such as your front yard.

Also, if your paved driveway runs near your house or another building, water will drain into the foundation. Water seeping into a foundation will cause structural damage. If you have a gravel driveway water will be directed to drain into the right places very easily.

How To Use Landscape Fabric

The first thing you have to do for constructing a gravel driveway is laying down landscape fabric. This geotextile fabric is an extremely important step for a successful project.

In order to get the best results, you must know how to use the fabric so you will have a successful finish to the project. It won't do you any good if you have no idea how to work with landscape fabric or how to apply it to your gravel driveway. Following each step in order will decide whether your gravel driveway will work the way it's supposed.

Preparations And Measurements

If you are simply revamping your current driveway, simply measure the current dimensions.  Otherwise, know the area of your future driveway to make sure you have the right amount of fabric and gravel. Use markers that are visible and block off the area where your driveway will be.

Get measurements by multiplying the length by the width. It's a good idea to get more fabric than what the area calls for. You can overlap the fabric and have a backup if any of the fabric rips.

Make sure the area is clear of all vegetation and if the ground is soft, you might have to remove a layer of topsoil. It's really important that you do not build a gravel driveway on soft or mushy ground.

Add Layers of Gravel

Once you have the fabric in place start adding layers of rock. The base gravel should be at least 4 inches in diameter and have rough edges. The dump truck can drop off the gravel layer for you to spread out.

Make sure to tamp to compact the base layer before starting the middle layer. Once it's compacted, the base layer of gravel should be at least 4 inches deep on top of the landscape fabric.

You have to repeat this process of spreading and tamping for 2 more layers. The middle or second layer should have rocks around 2-3 inches in diameter. The top layer should have smaller, angular rocks. Each layer should be at least 4 inches deep after being compacted.

Installing landscape fabric is a must for gravel driveways. Be sure you have woven geotextile fabric because standard landscape fabric is too thin and can be easily torn during installation.

Add Edging

Finally, to give your driveway a “finished” look and to prevent gravel from spilling into the surrounding dirt from the edge of the driveway consider edging the driveway with aluminum edging. This material provides an attractive look and will keep the edges of the driveway from looking “ragged” or unkept.
