The Gravel Stabilizer Grids are made from 100% recycled plastic. Each roll measures 3.97’ x 149’ with hexagonal cells which are 2 ¼” across and 1” tall. This smaller cell provided by these grids allow for a very manageable stone size for infill using angular stones. The stones should be clean, washed, and uniform in size between 3/16" and 3/8". By using a smaller stone, your finished product will have a tidy look with plenty of strength to both walk and drive on. They are also ADA compliant.

They are offered in four colors; black, grey, tan and red. They are also effective in reducing erosion and can be installed on up to a 10% grade slope.

Stakes are included with each roll.

Gravel Driveway Construction Overview

Basically, there are 4 materials used for driveway surfaces, gravel, asphalt, concrete, and pavers. The material you select should be based on your budget, the climate you live in, and the length of the driveway. Gravel driveways are the most affordable across the board. Asphalt comes in second in cost followed by cement and pavers. Even though gravel driveways are less expensive, they do require more maintenance over time. Yearly maintenance requires herbicide applications and raking. You will need to add more gravel every 2 to 4 years, especially if you live in a snowy environment or your driveway is on a slope. Snow removal will scrape up a good amount of gravel leaving it on the side of the road. Every year, you will have to rake the gravel to get it back where it belongs.

Gravel is a great alternative when it comes to cost but you must be willing to keep up with the maintenance. Gravel is a durable material and will create a very attractive driveway. Read on to find out everything you need to know for buying and installing gravel.

What Gravel Should You Use

Installing a gravel driveway will require three different sizes of gravel. The bottom layer (base layer) of gravel consists of stones around the size of a baseball and are referred to as #3 stones. This layer of rock will create a strong foundation for the driveway and guarantee good drainage. This layer will also keep the smaller rocks from disappearing into the soil. You will need to add approximately a 4-inch layer of rock.

Now, on top of the base layer, you will have to add another 3 to 4 inches of golf ball-sized rocks referred to as #57 rocks. These smaller rocks provide a similar function by making the transition to the top layer.

The top layer of gravel should consist of 4 inches of marble-sized rocks. These rocks will vary in color from black to gray, or rust. This will depend on the kind of stones used.

Each layer of gravel must be machine-crushed stone, not round rocks. These rocks have an angular, triangle shape that will lock together on the driveway creating a stable, sound surface. Keep in mind, round rocks will create an unstable surface. As an example, river rocks are not a good choice for the driveway.

When preparing for the top layer, you need “traffic-bound” or “dense-grade” gravel. This rock has dust and smaller pieces of rock in the mix. The dust forms a cement-like bond when compacted.

You should choose the best gravel for the top layer of gravel which includes crushed shale, granite, limestone, and concrete. Also, if you want an aesthetic allure, these different kinds of gravel come in a variety of colors.

Some Additional Information For Your Gravel

Even though choosing the right gravel is very important, good preparation for the site is even more important. Before you can lay down any gravel you have to remove the top soil that you can use elsewhere. The topsoil consists of organic matter which is perfect for plants but will be a spongy, unstable subsurface for the driveway. Hardpan is a layer beneath it, this is the upper layer of soil, which is dense and hard creating a superior foundation for the driveway.

At this time, some people will use a herbicide while others will use landscaping fabric. Now is the time, to consider how you will handle weed control.

Stabilized Gravel Driveway

Gravel Driveway in Front Yard

Appropriate grading is very important to the success of the driveway. For great results, the gravel driveway needs a crown to allow water to drain quickly. The crown is in the middle of the driveway which is just slightly higher than the sides. Also, if you live in an area that has a lot of rain or snow, you should install ditches on either side of the driveway to move water away for good drainage.

After you have started laying the gravel, you have to compact each layer with a rolling machine before moving on to the next layer to create a solid foundation. If you feel this is far too much work, consider hiring a professional. Installing a gravel driveway is a lot of hard work for most homeowners and will require heavy machinery. Hiring a professional with the right equipment can get the job done in just a few days.

Gravel Grid Used for Driveway

Optional Stabilizer Grid for a Superior Surface

If you are looking for the most stable gravel surface possible consider a stabilizer grid. These grids are available in various different forms and help to provide support, reduce maintenance and can nearly eliminate the need to add gravel to the surface over time.

In Conclusion

While gravel driveways are the most affordable, it will take a good deal of work to get it done. You might want to bring in a professional to help you get a great driveway that will last for a long time. Yearly maintenance will depend on the climate you live in and the time you are willing to put in. Our instructions should be easy to understand but if you need help, it will be worth your time to hire a professional to help you out.
